"As a mother of three and a water safety instructor,
I have noticed that trained babies begin to kick up to the surface in a calm and confident manner when submerged, whereas untrained babies become disorientated and sometimes panic."

"I always took my eldest son swimming at 3.30pm, when he would be at his most difficult. A good swim always settled him, and what followed was a big feed and sleep - heaven for me!"

For our babies
Swimming can have physical, emotional and intellectual benefits for babies. Many parents have commented on the fact that their swimming babies are stronger, feed and sleep easier and develop word association skills early on. Swimbabies courses are also great for socialisation.
Taking babies as young as 8 weeks old to water safety classes helps keep their natural dive reflex alive, which enables them to move freely underwater by holding their breath. This itself could save your baby's life one day.
Babies with special needs sometimes really benefit from swimming as it can compliment physiotherapy. Be sure to discuss his or her particular needs with your GP and instructor first as submersions may not always be appropriate for every baby.
For mums, dads and carers
Mums and dads too are enjoying the endless benefits of taking their babies to swimming lessons. Learning about water safety is of vital importance now so many of us travel to seaside resorts for our holidays and even more so for those who live near open water or in coastal towns. Parents enjoy knowing that their babies are safe and confident around water, as well as learning how to deal with them in it.
Parents find swimming with their babies strengthens the bonding process too, as it enables them to spend true quality time with them. Dads especially comment on this, as they often only see their babies sleeping or feeding after a long hard day 'earning a crust'! For mothers who have had a difficult birth or who are suffering from the post natal 'blues', it can be a truly enriching experience.
